Tear stains are a constant struggle for the English bulldog owner. After all, we don’t want our adorable bulldogs’ faces to be marred by these sad-looking tear stains. Thankfully, there are a few ways to both treat and prevent them as much as possible.

What causes tear stains in English bulldogs?

In most cases, tear stains aren’t anything to be concerned about. They can be caused by a variety of factors including genetics, diet, or allergies. However, they can also be caused by an infection or by tear drainage issues. Either way, it’s best to get it checked out by your veterinarian, as finding out the cause will help you preventing tear stains later on.

How to remove them

Getting rid of your dog’s tear stains mostly involve regular cleaning and care. Follow these steps so that you can safely remove and prevent your bulldog’s stains:

  1. Trim and clip the fur around the eyes.
  2. After trimming, wash or wipe your dog’s face to remove the tears and gunk that have accumulated. You will want to do this daily to prevent further buildup. Regular grooming can also help keep stains at bay.
  3. Use a collar to prevent your dog from pawing or rubbing their eyes.
  4. If the tears are excessive, talk to your veterinarian about possible medications or lifestyle changes that can further prevent tear stains.
