Our English bulldogs will eat anything…except their pills. No one enjoys having to take a pill, but dogs can be especially stubborn. If you’re struggling to administer pills to your English bulldog, read on to learn some tips to make the process easier!
Wrap the pill in treats or food
Pills always go down easier with some treats or food. Your dog is unlikely to swallow a pill bare, but if you wrap it in a treat or some food, they won’t notice that the pill is in there. Pill pockets are specifically designed to encase pills and tablets. However, you can also use ordinary food, as well. Peanut butter, meat, canned dog food, and fruits are all excellent options. Just ensure you have enough food to mask the flavor of the pill.
Prepare the pill out of sight
English bulldogs are smart creatures. If they see you preparing a pill for them, they’re less likely to swallow it even if you’ve smothered it in their favorite food. Instead, prepare the pill out of sight so that your dog won’t know that you’re trying to give them a pill.
Break up the pill
Most pills for dogs are small to begin with, but you may have to cut it up even smaller if your dog is noticing the pill in their food. Just be sure not to crush the pill, as this will simply make their food taste bad.
Talk to your veterinarian
If your English bulldog remains stubborn when it comes to taking their pills, you may need to speak with your veterinarian. They may know techniques that will help your dog take their pill, or they can provide alternative methods of administering the necessary medicine such as giving your dog a shot.
